Scaling

Scaling

Dental scaling is a professional cleaning procedure that removes plaque and hardened calculus (tartar), particularly around the areas where the teeth and gums meet. Ultrasonic scalers are commonly used for this purpose.

Scaling

Surface stains are not always completely removed by conventional scaling alone, so additional polishing or stain-removal procedures may be required.

Scaling

Food debris and bacteria form a biofilm on the teeth. If it is not removed effectively, plaque can mature and eventually mineralize into calculus. Thorough daily brushing and interdental cleaning are therefore essential.

After Scaling: What to Keep in Mind

01

Avoid irritating foods and drinks on the day of scaling

Very hot, cold, spicy, or acidic foods may temporarily increase sensitivity after scaling.

02

Brush gently for the first day or two

Continue brushing rather than avoiding the area completely, but use gentle pressure around sensitive or inflamed gums.

03

Persistent sensitivity should be checked

Temporary sensitivity can occur after scaling. If it is severe, worsens, or persists longer than expected, a dental examination is recommended.

Scaling Doctor’s Tip

Many patients assume that scaling is covered by National Health Insurance only once a year and hesitate to visit again even when additional cleaning is needed. However, depending on the periodontal condition and the type of treatment required, additional periodontal cleaning or treatment may also qualify for insurance coverage.
Rather than waiting until the next annual scaling, visit your dentist if plaque, calculus, bleeding, or gum inflammation develops and have the necessary areas evaluated.
