Could I Have Bruxism?

People who frequently clench their teeth during the day—often during periods of stress or concentration—may also clench or grind their teeth during sleep. These habits are known as clenching and bruxism.
If you frequently clench your teeth and wake up with soreness, fatigue, or stiffness in your teeth, jaw muscles, or around the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), bruxism may be one possible cause.

How Bruxism Can Wear Down Your Teeth

Repeated grinding and clenching can gradually wear down the biting surfaces of the teeth. As the enamel becomes thinner, the teeth may appear flatter, and the underlying yellowish dentin may become exposed.
When tooth wear progresses faster than expected for a person’s age, careful monitoring and preventive management are important to help protect the remaining natural tooth structure.

Scalloped impressions along the sides of the tongue or ridges on the inner cheeks can sometimes be associated with repeated pressure from the teeth, including habitual clenching. However, these findings alone are not enough to diagnose bruxism.

Treatment Options for Bruxism

01

Botulinum Toxin Treatment

Botulinum Toxin Treatment
For patients with excessive activity of the jaw-closing muscles, botulinum toxin may be used to reduce muscle activity and help relieve muscle-related tension and discomfort.

02

Occlusal Splint Therapy

Occlusal Splint Therapy
A custom-made night guard or occlusal splint can help protect the teeth from excessive wear and reduce the mechanical stress caused by grinding and clenching during sleep.

MINISH Tooth Restoration

If significant tooth wear has already occurred, restorative treatment may be considered to rebuild the lost tooth structure, restore function, and improve the appearance of worn teeth.
The appropriate treatment depends on the extent of tooth wear, bite, remaining tooth structure, and the underlying cause of the bruxism.
